Kalkulátor.cz is one of the leading Czech energy and insurance comparators. Winner of the prestigious WEBTOP100 award in the SEO category.
Startup full of challenges. From technology through UX to the customer zone. A project that employs developers (frontend and backend), project managers, as well as content and performance marketing specialists.
The idea to create an online energy and insurance comparison engine Kalkulátor.cz was born in 2019 in the cradle of startups - Creative Dock. Unlike other comparison engines, Kalkulátor.cz is a customer-friendly platform offering a long-term and mutually beneficial relationship.
The project was launched in 6 months from the first meeting, in September 2020 with the first vertical ENERGO (comparison of electricity and gas offers). We added car insurance in January 2021, travel insurance and realty insurance during June-July 2021. In its first year, Kalkulátor.cz had over 100,000 registered users.

Challenge
Clarify the jungle of offers and simplify decision making
Energy tariffs, travel insurance, mobile flat rates, internet or mortgages – the market is oversaturated with options. That's why we tackled a major challenge with the Kalkulátor.cz team: How to deliver a simple and quick comparison that is fair, free of unnecessary ballast, annoyance and also leads to conversion?
This required:
- interfacing with many third-party APIs
- creating a robust backoffice system for product and business case management
- UX that even a grandmother can handle and still won't disappoint a digital enthusiast
Example of digitization
At first sight, the Calculator looks simple – and that's exactly what was intended. But under the surface runs a sophisticated system that connects dozens of providers, filters only the most current and relevant offers, and makes the whole process of negotiation effortless.
What we designed and built:
- Homepage with signposting, all landing pages, calculators, etc.
- Mobile and desktop version
- Forms for energies (with bill verification)
- Telecom price comparison including internet speed measurement
- Travel and property insurance
- Admin for product management and backoffice for business cases
Key Project Achievements
Each product category (energy, finance, insurance, telecommunications) has its own specifics, calculation logic and business model – the project unifies everything under one UX.
No annoying phone calls, clear communication about working with personal data, the ability to arrange everything online.
The calculators work equally well on mobile, tablet and computer. Optimization was done with real user scenarios in mind.
React.js, GraphQL, Typescript, Symfony, PostgreSQL, Tailwind and other stacks enabled seamless connections to dozens of API partners.
Results and impact
After the launch of the project, the whole process was significantly simplified – from selection to negotiation. This has led to an increase in the number of negotiated contracts and return users.
Clear, understandable, fair – these are the most common terms that are repeated in evaluations and in direct communication. This helps to build long–term trust, which is key in finance and energy.
The architecture of the system allows for expansion with additional products and services. The plan is to connect to other providers, smart recommendation of offers or even more automated negotiation.
